The Rise of AI Scams

Rosa was heading out the door, when she got a call from her mom. “Are you ok?,” she asked. “Yes mom, I’m fine, just about to leave the house," replied Rosa. Rosa’s mom was relieved and asked her to talk to her father who was in tears.
Moments earlier, Rosa’s dad received a call from an unknown number. A man on the phone said that his daughter had been in a bad accident and needed his help. He explained that Rosa had asked him to call for some money to help with the accident. Rosa’s father was confused and at the same time frightened that something bad had happened to his daughter.
The stranger interjected, "Wait a minute, you should speak with your daughter." Then, a voice came through, "Dad? It's me! I've been seriously hurt in an accident and I need your help!" It was Rosa’s voice and her dad immediately started to panic.
Rosa’s mom overheard the conversation and snatched the phone away. She quickly hung up as she realized something was off. She immediately called Rosa’s cell phone to confirm that she was safe.
In the digital age, we've come to expect certain conveniences and efficiencies powered by artificial intelligence. But with the rise of AI comes a darker side: scammers are leveraging this technology to create increasingly sophisticated and convincing fraud.
Five AI-Powered Scam Tactics to Watch Out For
AI is changing the game. Scammers are no longer limited to generic phishing emails. They're now using AI to clone voices, create deepfakes, and craft hyper-personalized messages that hit shockingly close to home. Even the most cautious individuals are at risk. It’s no longer enough to just be “smart” – you need to be aware of these new AI-powered tactics.
Voice Cloning
Imagine getting a call from a loved one in distress, their voice sounding exactly as you know it. AI can replicate voices with just a few seconds of audio scraped from online sources, enabling scammers to impersonate family members and trick you into sending money during fake emergencies.
Precautions: Set up a family safe word for real emergencies. After the recent incident, Rosa and I set up a safe word that we would verify. Never act based on a voice alone. Hang up and call back using a known number. Ask a personal question only they would know. Keep in mind that caller ID can be manipulated by scammers. This is known as spoofing. Do not assume a call is legitimate simply because it appears to be from a familiar source, such as your bank or a relative.
Deepfakes
AI-generated videos and photos can now make it appear as if someone said or did something they never did. From fake celebrity endorsements to political misinformation, deepfakes are becoming harder to spot.
Precautions: If a video or image seems off, don't react immediately. Cross-check with trusted sources and avoid sharing emotionally charged content until it’s verified. Remember, deepfakes often rely on urgency or shock to bypass your skepticism. To guard against deepfakes, simply slow down your reaction. This is one of the easiest and most potent strategies for defense.
Phishing Emails & Texts
Scammers use AI to craft phishing messages that look legitimate and mimic real institutions. They might appear to come from your bank or delivery services, trying to trigger urgency or curiosity to get you to click a link.
Precautions: Don't click links in unexpected messages. Go directly to the source to verify. Check the sender's address or number carefully and don't respond if something feels suspicious. Fraudsters often impersonate legitimate entities by fabricating email addresses and phone numbers. They may also construct deceptive websites mirroring genuine ones. If any aspect appears suspicious, take time to confirm its authenticity and avoid hasty reactions.
Fake Websites
Phishing scams often lead to fake websites that closely resemble trusted brands. AI helps scammers create convincing clones to steal personal and financial information.
Precautions: Avoid entering personal information on sites reached through an email or text. Type the website address directly into your browser and look for misspellings or unusual characters in the URL. Be cautious, a website's appearance can be deceiving. Fraudsters often employ deceptive links to steal your credentials, financial details, and other personal data.
Personalized Scams
AI makes it easier for scammers to gather your personal details from social media and public records. They use this information to create tailored messages that seem highly relevant to you, catching you off guard.
Precautions: Be mindful of what you share online. Adjust your privacy settings and avoid posting information that could be used against you. Verify any oddly specific messages before responding. It's easy for scammers to gather enough information from public sources to appear legitimate, eliminating the need to hack. The more details they assemble, the more believable and effective their deceptive schemes become.
